The UNESCO is pleased to announce the opening of the call for the prestigious UNESCO Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science 2023. This award, created in 1951 through a generous donation from Mr. Bijoyanand Patnaik, Founder and President of the Kalinga Foundation Trust in India, aims to recognize individuals, institutions, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and other entities that have made a significant contribution to the popularization of science and technology.

Scientific outreach is essential to bring science closer to the public and bridge the gap between science and society. If you have made a significant contribution to the popularization of science through media, publications, or other forms of communication, this is your opportunity to be recognized for your efforts.

This award is open to candidates from the SICA region (Central American Integration System) and encourages those who have worked tirelessly in science communication to submit their applications. Nominees are expected to have a deep understanding of the role of science, technology, and research in improving public welfare and developing innovative solutions.

It is important to note that applications must be endorsed by the candidate's government, in consultation with their National Commission for UNESCO, or by an NGO with an official partnership with UNESCO. Self-nominations without the appropriate endorsement will not be considered.

Award

The prize consists of a $40,000 cash award, a certificate, and the UNESCO-Albert Einstein silver medal. Additionally, the laureate will receive the prestigious Kalinga Chair, established by the Government of India, which includes a certificate and a cash reward of $5,000.

The laureate will be invited to embark on a fascinating journey to India, where they will have the opportunity to interact with scientists and science communicators for a period of two to four weeks. All facilities will be provided to familiarize the laureate with Indian life, culture, educational and research institutions, as well as India's industrial and economic development.

Application Process

The deadline for submitting complete applications to UNESCO is July 30, 2023. For more information on how to participate and access the application form, please visit the official website of the UNESCO Kalinga Prize.
