About UNESCO in Uzbekistan

UNESCO is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Uzbekistan became a Member State of the Organization in 1993, and since then, the cooperation between UNESCO and Uzbekistan has deepened and strengthened. In 1996, the UNESCO Office in Uzbekistan was established and enhanced the cooperation between the two even further.

The primary focus of the UNESCO Office in Uzbekistan is to provide technical assistance in its areas of expertise. Uzbekistan has actively participated in UNESCO's initiatives and has been elected twice to the Executive Board of the Organization for the periods of 1997-2001 and 2009-2013.

The UNESCO Office in Uzbekistan comprises a dedicated team of 30 staff members. Currently, it oversees several flagship projects in areas such as Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Teachers' Professional Development, Media Sector Reform, and the promotion of  tangible and intangible heritage and the creative economy.

In terms of programmatic and standard-setting support, the office assists the government of Uzbekistan in the preservation of built heritage throughout the country, with a particular emphasis on the four UNESCO World Heritage sites. It also focuses on public education, higher education, technical and vocational education, access to information, freedom of expression, as well as the promotion of cultural diversity, intangible heritage, and the creative economy. Through its dedicated efforts, the UNESCO Office in Uzbekistan strives to contribute to the preservation and promotion of cultural and educational values, while supporting the country's sustainable development goals.
